For reading a retail planogram the initial step is to understand which display type is used in the planogram. Various types that can be used by the planogram creator are gondolas, coolers, vending machines, peg boards, slat walls, etc.
After identifying the specifications of the display the next important step is to successfully identify the products and its specifications. Any mistake in this step will mess up the whole planogram implementation. Usually, a planogram will contain the product name, brand and other related specifications. Carefully matching the details of the planogram with the products available in store is very important and can save a lot of troubles with non-compliance.
After identifying the products next and the last step is to identify the number of products to be placed on the shelf. This includes identifying which products should be placed where and with how many facings. Increasing or decreasing number of facing will affect the exposure of the product to customers and any change in these numbers may result in not achieving the aim of the planogram developer. The one who reads a planogram should be capable of understanding the information the planogram designer is planning to convey by giving attention to the information provided.
There are some general instructions to be followed by a planogram designer to enable effective planogram reading. The planogram designer should make sure to mention all necessary information regarding the dimensions and product, brand and all other necessary information including unique product identification code (UPC). So that there is no confusion in reading a planogram. Also, the planogram should be simple and graphical as possible as the graphical representation will help to easily read the planogram.
